Abstract

Strategic innovation has increasingly become a critical determinant of competitive advantage within emerging technology ecosystems, particularly in developing economies such as Nigeria. Nigerian tech startups continue to operate in a highly dynamic and uncertain business environment characterized by funding limitations, infrastructural deficiencies, regulatory ambiguity, and intense market competition. Despite these challenges, several startups have demonstrated remarkable growth through innovative business models, digital transformation strategies, product development, and strategic partnerships. This study examines the relationship between strategic innovation and competitive advantage among tech startups in Nigeria, while also identifying the major barriers affecting innovation-driven growth.

The study adopted a descriptive survey research design with both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were obtained from a simulated sample of 400 respondents drawn from various Nigerian tech startup hubs using structured questionnaires and qualitative stakeholder insights. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression techniques were employed to analyze the data at a 0.05 level of significance.

Findings revealed that product innovation, process automation, and business model innovation were the most prevalent innovation practices among Nigerian startups. The results further showed a significant positive relationship between strategic innovation and indicators of competitive advantage, including market share growth, revenue growth, and customer retention. Access to funding was found to significantly strengthen the innovation–competitive advantage relationship, while regulatory clarity showed limited statistical influence within the study context. Key challenges identified include limited growth capital, talent retention difficulties, infrastructure gaps, and market fragmentation.

The study concludes that strategic innovation remains essential for sustaining competitive advantage in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem. It recommends increased investment in innovation financing, regulatory support mechanisms, talent development initiatives, and stronger collaboration among startups, investors, and policymakers.
