Abstract
This study evaluates the role of corporate communications in building organizational reputation within Heartland Alliance LTD/GTE, a leading non-governmental organization in Nigeria. The research was driven by the growing recognition that communication is central to how mission-driven organizations build trust, maintain credibility, and shape public perception. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to all staff categories within the organization. A total of 123 responses were analyzed to understand staff perceptions of internal communication quality, transparency, stakeholder engagement, and the overall effectiveness of communication strategies. Findings reveal that corporate communication significantly influences organizational reputation, with over 80% of respondents affirming strong internal communication practices and more than 70% indicating that the organization communicates its mission and values effectively. Staff identified critical areas requiring improvement, including leadership communication, visibility of achievements, staff engagement, and timeliness of updates. The study also shows that communication strongly affects trust, with nearly 62% of respondents indicating that it shapes their confidence “a great deal.” Overall, the results emphasize that effective communication is essential for strengthening institutional credibility, shaping public understanding, and ensuring that NGOs in Nigeria maintain a strong and trustworthy reputation.
