ABSTRACT

The rapid evolution of social media has transformed it from a grassroots communication platform into one of the most powerful advertising tools of the digital age. This study investigates the impact of social media advertising on modern consumer behavior, focusing specifically on Nigerian consumers aged 18 to 55. Employing a mixedmethod research design, the study examines how advertising formats such as video ads, influencer marketing, and sponsored posts shape purchasing decisions, brand perception, consumer preferences, and engagement. Data were collected from 200 active social media users through structured questionnaires, complemented by interviews with digital marketers and influencers to provide qualitative insights.

Findings reveal that videobased campaigns and influencerled promotions are the most effective in capturing consumer attention and driving purchasing behavior, particularly among younger users aged 18–34. Personalization, emotional appeal, and platformspecific strategies significantly enhance advertising effectiveness, while challenges such as ad fatigue, privacy concerns, and skepticism toward sponsored content persist. The study highlights that consumer trust and sustained engagement depend on ethical advertising practices and transparent communication.

The research concludes that for brands to remain competitive in Nigeria’s dynamic digital marketplace, they must adopt datadriven, audiencetailored, and socially responsible advertising strategies. By integrating personalization with ethical standards and leveraging platformspecific tools, businesses can strengthen consumer relationships and maximize advertising outcomes. This study contributes valuable insights for marketers, businesses, and policymakers seeking to navigate the rapidly evolving digital marketing landscape.
