Abstract
Faith-based institutions (FBIs) in Nigeria play a pivotal role in spiritual, social, and economic development, yet their sustainability depends heavily on effective leadership. This study investigates the relationship between strategic leadership and organizational growth in FBIs, employing a rapid mixed-methods approach that combined surveys (n=60) and semi-structured interviews (n=5) with clergy, administrators, and church workers. Findings reveal that FBIs have experienced notable growth in membership, finances, and outreach, driven by strategic planning, visionary leadership, and community engagement. Over 55% of survey respondents affirmed that leaders successfully balance spiritual and administrative responsibilities, while interviews highlighted the integration of biblical principles with modern management practices as central to institutional progress.
Despite these successes, challenges persist, including weak succession planning, doctrinal rigidity, internal politics, and limited technological adaptation. Literature corroborates these findings, emphasizing that servant leadership, visionary planning, and structured succession are critical for organizational sustainability (Greenleaf, 1977; Dada et al., 2020; Njeri, Ngui, & Mathenge, 2019). However, the study also identifies several challenges that may hinder sustainable growth, including technological adaptation, internal politics, and misappropriation of resources, weak succession planning, doctrinal rigidity and insufficient leadership training. Both quantitative and qualitative evidence suggest that while growth is evident, sustaining it will require addressing these challenges through deliberate reforms and leadership development.
The study concludes that strategic leadership rooted in Christian values but open to innovation is essential for FBIs to thrive in dynamic environments. Recommendations include investing in leadership training, strengthening succession frameworks, leveraging digital tools, and enhancing community engagement.
