ABSTRACT

The rapid digital transformation of Nigeria’s business environment has redefined how companies manage public image, stakeholder relationships, and competitive positioning. This paper critically examines online reputation management strategies tailored for Nigerian firms operating in an increasingly connected digital era. It explores contemporary challenges including social media proliferation, cybersecurity threats, misinformation risks, and evolving consumer expectations, while situating these within Nigeria’s distinctive socioeconomic and infrastructural realities. Drawing on reputation management theory and adapting it to local contexts, the study identifies key components of online reputation such as search engine visibility, social media sentiment, customer reviews, employee advocacy, and media coverage.

Findings reveal that effective reputation management requires integrated approaches combining proactive content strategies, realtime monitoring systems, authentic stakeholder engagement, and robust crisis preparedness protocols. The research underscores the importance of cultural sensitivity, multilingual communication, and mobilefirst strategies in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. It further highlights the role of corporate social responsibility, influencer partnerships, and technologyenabled monitoring tools in shaping positive reputation outcomes.

By bridging the gap between global reputation management frameworks and Nigeria’s unique digital realities, the paper contributes actionable insights for business leaders, policymakers, and communication professionals. Ultimately, it argues that companies that invest in proactive and contextually relevant reputation management practices are better positioned to achieve sustainable growth, customer loyalty, and resilience in an era where online perception directly influences business success.

Keywords: online reputation management, digital strategy, Nigerian businesses, social media, crisis communication, stakeholder engagement, corporate social responsibility.
